We are a family-run company which grows and sells seeds from our farm in Bruce County, Ontario.
Our Focus: Staple Crops
Staple crops are foods which…
- Form the foundation of your daily diet – carbohydrates and proteins
- Are easy to grow in whole-diet quantities
- Can be stored with a minimum of energy and bother
Many gardeners have only grown vegetables like lettuce, green beans, or tomatoes which provide vitamins, fibre, and delicious flavours and textures. Those things are all important, but they aren’t a complete diet.
Where do our carbohydrates and proteins come from?
Can we also grow those foods in our gardens?
Carrick Seeds is dedicated to answering those two questions. For too long, we have relegated the growing of our dietary staples to large fields and a food system focused on economies of scale. We want to encourage a food system where people can grow their own staples, select species and varieties adapted to local conditions and needs, and save their own seed of those varieties. To support this goal we sell only open-pollinated seeds, and we are a partner seed company with the Open Source Seed Initiative.
Our focus on staples doesn’t mean that we have ignored vegetables. But it does mean that you will find far fewer veggies and far more staples in our seed listings.
