Dynasty bean

$4.00

(Phaseolus vulgaris) – A cool new superstar bean for serious bean-growers. To the eater, it just looks like your classic dark red kidney bean, but to the farmer…

Developed by Dr. Peter Pauls and research technician Tom Smith at the University of Guelph in partnership with Hensall District Co-op using some fancy breeding called a conical cross, Dynasty yielded 15% more than previous varieties. A new variety usually manages more like a 1-2% increase, so this is extraordinary. As a result, it now makes up 90% of the dark red kidney acreage in Ontario, and 50-60% of North America’s whole kidney bean acreage. It is so remarkable that SeedWorld Group declared it the 2022 Seed of the Year and U of G declared it their 2024 Innovation of the Year.

It’s nice to eat too. When we’re done with all the grand accolades.

Stout bushes mature evenly, making for easy harvest of a generous crop of large red kidney beans. This is not just a bean for the big boys, but is also good for the humble home gardener who loves chili soup and wants to see what larger-scale farmers grow.

30 seeds/packet.

NOTE: I have no desire to compete with Hensall Co-op. I only sell packets of seed – no exceptions! If you want to buy a sack to grow this on a field scale, please contact Hensall.

Plant after last frost; soil must be warm or seed will rot. Sow 1” deep. Space bush beans 3” apart  in rows 24″ apart. Harvest dry beans when pods are fully dry; seed must be dry enough to not dent with a fingernail for storage. Dry beans can be further dried on a tarp, then threshed by dancing on them and winnowing away the chaff.
