Northeaster bean
$4.00
(Phaseolus vulgaris)
Pole, 8’/2.6 m tall. A Romano-type bean which bears large, flat pods 8” long by ¾” wide. Pick while pods are still flat, but seeds are just beginning to show. Early, bountiful, and delicious; probably my favourite green bean. 65 days to harvest, 95 days to maturity. 30 seeds/packet.
Northeaster produces an abundance of beans over a relatively short period of time, which is ideal for preserving, but not for fresh eating. To extend our picking window, we like to plant a second round of beans between the first round of plants in the first week of July. The first plants finish bearing while the second ones grow up and take over. Alternately, this variety can be paired with a later or longer-season one.
Also called ‘Kwintus’ or ‘Early Riser’.
65 days to harvest, 95 days to maturity.

Plant after last frost; soil must be warm or seed will rot. Sow 1” deep. Space pole beans in pairs 8” apart, with 8” between pairs if climbing twine, or in groups of 3-4 around single poles 1’ apart. Pick green beans before seeds start swelling, seed beans when pods are fully dry; seed must be dry enough to not dent with a fingernail for storage. Dry beans can be further dried on a tarp, then threshed by dancing on them and winnowing away the chaff.
