By far the earliest yardlong bean I have ever grown. I enjoyed eating yardlong beans when living in Cambodia as a child, but was disappointed to learn that they couldn’t be grown in Canada when my family returned here (they like a lot of heat). Now this variety opens that possibility again!
Pods grow in pairs on head-height vines and are about 20 inches/50 cm long; small, thin seeds are brown with darker brown streaking.
From Bátor, Hungary; I received them from Judit Fehér, with whom I connected through Magház, the Hungarian community seed-saving network. Magház lists this variety as coming from Orsolya Máthé, one of the leaders of the Banya-Tanya Alapítvány, an organization that works to bring people into greater harmony with Nature. 35 seeds/packet.

Plant once soil is warm, over 65º F/18º C, 1-1 ½” deep, 4-6” apart. Trellis pole and bush-with-runner types like beans. Leaves, immature pods, and seeds are all edible. Unlike common bean, cowpea has a taproot.
