Carouby de Maussane pea
$4.00
(Pisum sativum)
An old French heirloom, this variety impressed me for its enormous (5”/12.5cm), tender pods which, unlike many snow peas, stay tender and actually get sweeter as the seeds swell. I have heard of this pea reaching 4’/1.2 m in height or more; for me it only reached 2’/60 cm but still produced abundantly. However tall it grows for you, you will get better quality pods if you trellis it. If you happen to let pods get too old, I suspect they would make a perfectly serviceable dry pea; but I have enough trouble keeping my family from devouring my seed crop, so I don’t have extra to test! 75 days to harvest, 105 days to maturity. 40 seeds/packet.

Plant as soon as ground can be worked. Sow 1” deep and 2” apart, in a double row 8” wide. Trellis if necessary with twine or netting; can’t hang on to poles. Pick green shelling peas regularly to increase yields; pick dry peas when vines are drying down and seeds can no longer be dented with a fingernail. For fall planting, plant 6-8 weeks before first frost.
