Newburg onion

(Allium cepa)
An excellent yellow storage onion which easily lasted all winter in our house. Alan Kapuler bred this variety by dehybridizing a European storage onion.
Due to low germination when tested in Dec. 2023, we are increasing the quantity you receive in each packet.
If growing from seed, start indoors 8-10 weeks before frost-free date, and transplant out one week before it. Sprinkle seed on soil surface and sprinkle a bit more soil on top of it; can grow in flats. If growing from sets, plant sets to the depth of your first knuckle. Choose small sets; larger ones will bolt, decreasing bulb size. Space onions 4” apart in rows 8” apart. Once tops yellow and wither, pull plants; let cure in a dry, shady, airy place for a couple weeks, then cut off tops at 1” and store at normal room temperature in baskets or mesh bags.
To grow your own onion sets, broadcast seed in May (once soil is at 45°F/7°C), aiming for spacing of ½” both ways. Cover ¼” to ½” deep. Let onions grow until bulbs are ½”-¾” in diameter, then pull (probably as tops begin dying in July). Cull: sets over 1” will bolt, sets under ½” will be too weak. Cure for 10 days, until tops are fully dry. Replant in spring.
